Teaching French Grammar in Primary

It has been a while since my last post! I had a baby in October so I’ve been focusing on her for the last few months. Isn’t she cute?

I am back now and hope to post here semi-regularly! This week’s blog post is all about grammar. I find this to be the hardest thing to teach in a second language because they make mistakes based on their first language. How many of you are triggered by hearing “je suis fini”, “je j’aime” or “j’ai a”? When they start making mistakes like this every time they say something, it becomes a fossilized mistake and they become even harder to break. In this post, I’ll be talking about how I use La grammaire du jour in Grade One, Grade Two and Grade Three to address these errors. If you’re not sure if this resource is for you, click on this link for a sample of each grade. You can also visit my Freebie Library to find other freebies!

Back to School: The First Day of School in Grade 1

I’ve created this blog post to share my plans for the first day of school for Grade 1 French Immersion. Each school board in Ontario has different French hours, so I am providing plans for a full day, with a prep period factored in. You may find you need less than this if your board isn’t 100% French. I’ve also created a Back to School Guide that can help you plan other aspects of your return (classroom setup, setting up routines, letters for parents, activities, etc.). If you’re feeling overwhelmed, it’s a great place to start!

Culminating tasks: Do you use them in your classr Culminating tasks:

Do you use them in your classroom? I use them starting in grade one. I’ve created science units in both French and English for grades 1-3. Every single one of my units includes a culminating task.

Now this one may not be “Instagram pretty”, but it is always a hit in my class. It’s great because it’s hands on and because the materials are easy to get. I ask parents to send in recyclables. We compile them and students use what they need to create their mechanism.

This one is mine. Her name is Mme Enilorac (Caroline backwards) and she is a little bit high strung. She moves around quickly on her wheels, handing out papers with her 4 arms. You also submit your work directly to her in the Fini/Pas Fini flaps. Her favourite saying is “fais ton travail!” The kids find her hilarious and it encourages them to be creative on theirs.

We also make this activity cross curricular by writing a story about our mechanisms. This is made extra special because I bind their stories into little books. They love it! It’s no secret that grade 2 is my favourite grade, and this is one of the many reasons why.

SCHEDULING EMAILS: Did you know that you can sch SCHEDULING EMAILS:

Did you know that you can schedule emails with gmail? Most school boards these days are using google for their email platform and scheduling an email is simple and is such a useful tool!

From the app: when you have finished writing out your email, click on the 3 dots in the top right corner and hit schedule send. Select the date and time and you’re done!

From a computer: click on the blue arrow pointing down next to the send button. Click on schedule send and select the date and time! Simple, right?

Why schedule emails?
I schedule emails for various reasons. The first one is for newsletters. I would forget to send my emails out on time if I couldn’t schedule them. I write them out when I have time on my prep, schedule it and I don’t need to think about it anymore! This works great if you send your newsletters out on a specific day.

I also use them to answer emails. I try not to check my emails outside of work hours to maintain a good work/life balance, but sometimes I check anyway. If I have something to respond to, I will draft the response and schedule it to send out early the following morning.

Everything pictured here was purchased at Dollaram Everything pictured here was purchased at Dollarama. Letter beads with pipe cleaners are a great way to play with words while also working on those fine motor skills! This activity is best for SK and Grade 1, but I’ve had some JKs interested in trying it too. For your younger learners. You can change this out for larger beads to make this a fine motor only activity.

I seem to have gained quite a few followers on the I seem to have gained quite a few followers on the last few months. I think it's a great time to do an intro to me post since I've never actually done one! I'm Caroline (pronounced like Carolyn) and here are 10 facts about me:

🌷 I am a specialist in teaching French as a Second Language
🌷 I've been teaching for 8 years
🌷 I’ve taught a bunch of different grades and Grade 2 is my favourite. It has the best curriculum and I think I teach it well
🌷 While teaching Kindergarten isn't my cup of tea, I enjoy making resources for it so you'll probably see lots of kindergarten ideas here
🌷 I've been married since 2018
🌷 We had a baby girl in October. Her smile lights up the room
🌷 I am a crazy cat lady. I will be raising Baby J to be a crazy cat lady too 🐈‍⬛
🌷 I love the beach. I would live on a beach if I could, but since I can't, I bought a house with a pool since it's the next best thing
🌷 I play the piano. I'm classically trained and have my Grade 8 RCM
🌷 My science resources are my most popular
🌷 I love taking photos. My husband thinks I'm crazy because I m determined to take a photo of baby J every day for a year in the same pose. And yes, I realize this will soon become harder and harder as she becomes more mobile

Did you notice I threw in an extra fact in there? If you’ve made it until the end, nice to meet you! I'd love to hear a fact about you in the comments 😊

Happy Friday! Even though I’m on maternity leave Happy Friday! Even though I’m on maternity leave, Friday continues to be my favourite day of the week because it’s takeout day! Can’t wait for sushi tonight 😋

This is one of my favourite books to read because it’s a funny one. My class always enjoys it. It’s simple enough for beginning learners but also has an important message for later in primary. It introduces the topic of inclusion, even when someone is different. Elephant and Rosie are throwing a ball back and forth, and the snake wants to play too. They go through some trial and error before finding a way that the snake can play with them.

Are you teaching virtually right now? Are you doing read alouds online?
